An Introduction to the Event
Taking cues from the original Birdwatch Syracuse, The Charles partnered with Parsons The New School for Design for an afternoon portfolio review followed by a presentation on how to prepare students for taking on the workforce in NYC's creative industry.
Personalized Portfolio Reviews
Led by Lead Visual Designer Garrett Traya, the group portfolio review talked process, workflow and how to implement student's personality into their work. Following the review, our Creative Team gave an in-depth presentation on the ins and outs of professionalism, social presence and landing an internship/job after graduation.
What is Your Personal Brand?
Designer Ed Lee continued the presentations with a discussion on a Designer's personal brand – a topic often overlooked by those early on in their careers. Looking through a designer's online blog, website and social media profiles, he gave tangible advice on how to present yourself in a consistent, professional and unique way.
Creative Career Paths
Visual Designer, Ian Micallef led a short presentation that explored the multitude of paths graduates might come face to face in their early design careers. From in-house to agency, large to small and even freelance, he discussed the pros and cons a Designer could expect to face in each environment. To make the advice more applicable, Ian then described some of the most common Designer career goals and which career paths tailored to them best.
What We Look For in an Intern
Junior Creative Sianna Stewart led a final presentation, giving a glimpse behind the curtain at what The Charles looks for in their interns. Discussing values, skills and mindsets that best serve a Charles intern, she described common paths prior interns have successfully taken at The Charles.
